US-189 in Provo Canyon to close Saturday night

Crews continue excavating hillside for future northbound lanes

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 16, 2026) — The Utah Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to plan ahead for a major overnight closure of U.S. Route 189 in Provo Canyon on Jan. 17 through the morning of Jan. 18.

On Saturday, Jan. 17 at 9:30 p.m., crews will begin closing lanes on US-189 between Main Canyon Road in Wallsburg and the intersection of State Route 113 in Charleston. A full closure of the road will begin at 10 p.m. and last until Sunday, Jan. 18 at 4 a.m., allowing crews to safely excavate the steep hillside where the new northbound lanes will be shifted.

After the overnight closure, traffic will shift into one-way alternating traffic with flaggers until 9 a.m. This will give crews space to clean off the road and repair any temporary barrier fencing damaged during the excavation.

Since late December, crews have been conducting blasting and excavation work. Daily closures of US-189 from 10-10:50 a.m. every Monday-Thursday began in January and are expected to last through the end of February.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. For the latest updates, visit the UDOT Traffic website or download the UDOT Traffic app for iPhone or Android.
