President’s Day weekend travel expected to slow traffic on I-15 in central and southern Utah

Southbound delays of up to 30 minutes expected Friday afternoon

The Utah Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers heading out for President’s Day weekend to plan for delays on Interstate 15 in Central and Southern Utah.

Bright blue skies with fluffy white clouds cover most of the image with flat mountains in the background and asphalt in the foreground.

On Friday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 7 p.m., drivers on southbound I-15 from Spanish Fork to Nephi should expect increased traffic congestion, with peak delays of 30 minutes expected around 4 p.m.

Additional delays are expected on Monday, Feb. 16, from 2 to 7 p.m., on northbound I-15 between St. George and Cedar City, with delays of up to 10 minutes at 5 p.m.

Traffic engineers expect heavier travel volumes in Southern Utah, where more than 30,000 people are expected in the St. George area for two major soccer tournaments, a baseball tournament, the Virgin River Half Marathon, and the Parade of Homes.

To help ease holiday travel, most UDOT construction projects stateside will suspend work and open all lanes where possible. However, some existing lane restrictions or traffic shifts will remain in place as needed to protect work zones and keep crews and drivers safe.

Drivers are encouraged to check conditions before they go, allow extra travel time and plan ahead for peak holiday traffic. Real-time traffic updates are available on the UDOT Traffic app or by visiting udottraffic.utah.gov
