Crews begin foundation work for new bridge
SALT LAKE CITY (March 3, 2026) — The Utah Department of Transportation has demolished the west half of the University Avenue bridge between 600 South and 680 South in Provo as part of the ongoing rebuild project.

Crews are still wrapping up final cleanup activities, and heavy demolition work is complete on the west side bridge. Today, the team began driving piles (long steel columns) into the ground to provide a solid foundation for the new bridge deck.
“This milestone represents real, visible progress on a route that Utah Valley depends on every day,” UDOT Project Manager Andy Spencer said. “University Avenue carries everyone from local families visiting their college students to regional freight. Rebuilding this 60 year-old bridge will reduce congestion and create safer, more comfortable options for people who walk and bike downtown through Provo.”
Once finished, the project will rebuild this key bridge and improve travel through the area by adding wider sidewalks on both sides, dedicated bike lanes in each direction and a multi-use path on the west side of the bridge connecting 500 South to 600 South.
Traffic restrictions remain in place during this phase of work. Travel is reduced to one lane in each direction over the bridge, and nearby side streets may close overnight as construction continues.
Drivers traveling from south of Provo toward Provo Canyon are encouraged to use Exit 272 (800 North) to access the canyon and avoid the work zone.
Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors. For real-time travel information visit udottraffic.utah.gov.
