New improvements mark progress toward a stoplight-free Bangerter Highway
The Utah Department of Transportation joined local leaders and students today to celebrate the completion of four new, free-flowing interchanges on Bangerter Highway at 4700 South, 9800 South, 13400 South and 2700 West.

The improvements are the latest step in UDOT’s long-term effort to remove all stoplights on Bangerter Highway and make it function more like a freeway. Construction began in summer 2023, and now that it is done, UDOT traffic engineers estimate the improvements will save drivers eight minutes of travel time.
“Bangerter Highway plays a vital role on the west side, and these upgrades are part of a long-term vision to make travel safer and more predictable for everyone,” UDOT Region Two Director Robert Stewart said. “Seeing students use the new pedestrian bridge and learn about how these interchanges work is a powerful reminder of why we do this work and who it benefits.”
Bangerter Highway is now free-flowing, without stoplights, from Interstate 15 in Draper to 4100 South in Taylorsville. With more than 60,000 vehicles using Bangerter Highway each day, these upgrades will make driving safer and more reliable for people traveling across the west side of the Salt Lake Valley.
As part of today’s celebration, students from two nearby schools (Elk Meadows Elementary and Elk Ridge Middle School) learned about construction, participated in hands-on activities and used the new pedestrian bridge at 9800 South, which now gives them a safer route to and from school.
In addition, UDOT collected canned goods at the event to donate to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
